Summary
Eleven year old Zana Dugolli loves her village life in Kosovo. But her life has never felt secure. Albanian Kosovars have long been denied basic freedoms, and relationships with Serbs have been tense at best. Now the Serb special police are stopping buses and checking I.D.'s. They are looking for weapons and members of the KLA. One day the leader of the KLA is murdered and his family massacred. The tinderbox that has been Kosovo explodes. Mortar shells rain down on Zana's village.

This essentially true story, based on the experience of a young boy the author met in Kosovo, this novel will help young readers understand this war and how it might be possible for a child to survive without bitterness.

Booklist, Starred Review
Based on the Experience of one Albanian family caught up in the was in Kosovo, this moving novel tells the story through the eyes of a young girl, who sees her father and two brothers killed in an attack on their village . . . Mead provides a historical introduction about the conflicts as well as an afterward about her own visits in 1999 to refugee camps. But readers will see that Zana can't make out politics . . . The power in the story is the personal drama, especially Zana's enduring bond with her best friend, a Serb girl. There's much to talk about. Add this to the Holocaust curriculum.
